On the north coast of Madalena do Pico, where the black stone corrals descend to the cliff and the channel opens up to Faial, Terrasalgada will expand its portfolio to Pico Island. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, and it is this landscape, not the program, that dictates the location of the house.
Three single-story houses, spaced apart and set upon the vineyard, without imposing themselves on the walls that have been erected there by hand over generations. White lime, clay tiles, wood and basalt: nothing that the island hasn't built before. The vineyard remains; it is the house that learns to live with it. On one side, a view that includes the highest mountain in Portugal, on the other the Atlantic and Faial Island.
Each house is entirely private, with the discreet service that defines Terrasalgada. Here there is nothing to explain, just the vineyard at dawn, the canal at dusk, and the mountain behind. For us, true luxury cannot be explained: it is lived.
